New! The McCall Pattern Company Shirtdress Sew-Along

McCall Pattern Company Shirtdress Sew-Along

Are you game for sewing a shirtdress this season?! Come sew along with us as we lead the McCall Pattern Company Shirtdress Sew-Along over the next couple of months.

For this sew-along you’re welcome to use any current shirtdress pattern from McCall’s, Vogue Patterns, Butterick or Kwik Sew. You can use a vintage pattern of ours if you’d like, though we may not be able to answer questions specific to old patterns.

Take a look at our Shirtdress Board on Pinterest for pattern ideas and sewing inspiration:

Follow The McCall Pattern Company’s board Shirtdress Patterns on Pinterest.

Now’s the time to get your pattern as we’re hosting an all-brand online sale today through Sunday, May 1. Shop:

We’ll discuss fabrics for your shirtdress in a coming post, but in the meantime be on the lookout for lightweight cottons, chambrays, shirtings, linens, and lightweight woven blends. Tip: The less wrinkling from your fabric, the better.

What do you think about us also hosting a Shirtdress Sew-Along Facebook Group in conjunction with this? This would be the place to go to post comments, questions, and to share your status updates.

Let us know if you think you might be joining us for this sew-along. It’s a go-at-your-own-pace kind of thing, so if you don’t have time now you can always read the posts and sew later. No rush! Next week we’ll aim to post a Sew-Along schedule, so stay tuned.

We’ve been sewing since 1863.

    1. Zina I have the same concern. I’ve been forcing myself to grab 30 minutes to two or so hours a few days out of the week. It’s a slow process but 1. it has improved my mood immensely; 2. it’s MY me time even though it’s a tiny slice of my day.

  9. Count me in. I have the pattern – Kwik Sew 4155 and the fabric and have had it at the top of the queue for a while. But it keeps getting bumped by other things! The sew along is just what I need to get it going!

  10. Yes!!! I’m starting my shirtdress today!! Butterick 5556 but that doesn’t mean I still won’t participate by making another shirtdress! 😀

Love the idea of a Facebook group as well!!

  20. Perfect, I’m in!!

  21. I have 2 Buttericks, 6091 & 6333, and not sure whether the godets or the gathered skirt will be more flattering (read less bulky) for my 66-yo shape. I’ll commit only to trying to join as most of my sewing is in my mind … and my body’s in the garden. 🙂

  22. Count me in! I received All my shirtdress pattern last week so i am ready

  23. Would love to be part of a shirt dress sewalong

  27. I’m in! I just need to find the right fabric.

  30. Would love to join! Great idea.

  31. I’m excited ! Will be my first piece of clothing I will be sewing ! When I looked at patterns they only go up to xl? Any suggestions? Thank you so much ?

    1. @Debbie O – Google the curvy sewing collective blog – they have tutorials on how to grade up a pattern!!

As for me l am doing my favorite – a pattern mashup: bodice M6696 and skirt M7391!!!

      1. Ohhhh nice! Thank you! I will have to look at both the site and your mashup patterns.!

      2. Me again ! I looked at Pattern M7391 but it just shows a shirt?

        1. The McCalls 7351 is a recent addition as a shirtdress. I have noticed that McCalls do recycle their pattern numbers from time to time!! 🙂

  32. We’re in! @stitchsewingstudio

  33. I was just wondering about what to make… a shirt dress sounds ideal. Count me in. Facebook page? Sure.

  34. Is there a definition of a “shirtdess”? What makes it different from an ordinary waisted dress?

    1. Hi Christine! For our purposes we’re defining shirtdress as a dress that closes at the bodice front using buttons, much like a shirt. It does not have to be waisted to be considered a shirtdress.

  35. I just bought this pattern two weeks ago. I’d love to join the sew a long!

  36. I’ve been wanting to make a shirt-dress for a while. This will be the excuse I need!

  43. How perfect! I just ordered M7380, and I just need to find a good fabric!

  44. I just pick out a shirtdress pattern last week. I would sure appreciate guidance. I’m admittedly intimidated!

  45. I’m in! Yes, please have a facebook group!

  46. Love McCalls M7387 but the directions for the crease in the back are just a little confusing. It seems as though its a double crease? I can’t seem to get mine to work right.

  47. I’m happy this is going to happen. I love the idea of having a special FB group!

  48. Admittedly I have a zillion things in the queue at the moment but I have wanted to tackle my McCalls shirtdress pattern for so long, this is just the motivation I need! Might even make two!
Thank you, so looking forward to it.

  49. Facebook would be good; it’s worked really well for other sewing groups I’ve worked with (the photo part is the swell part).
I love shirt dresses! I make a new one every summer, have the fabric and an old pattern just waiting!

  50. I love the idea. But for those of us who stay away from Facebook or Pinterest, is there another way of us participating? And can we pick a pattern of our choice? I have a McCalls shirtdress, some incredible Tula Pink fabric, and a 50th class reunion in 3 weeks.

  51. I’m in. I love shirtdresses

  52. I’m so excited! This will be my first sew along ever. I am a beginner, so I hope I can keep up.

I like the idea of a FB group. But, I would hope it’s not a public group as my friends are not so interested in my sewing adventures. 😉

  53. This sounds perfect! I’d love to join a closed fb group for sharing and chatting. Let me know if you need a backup admin for accepting applicants.

  54. I’m in! I have a pattern and possible fabric. I just need to find the time!

  55. I’m in! Been planning to make M7351 soon – have the fabric too!

  78. Great idea! A shirtwaist was definitely near the top of my to do list and I think it just jumped to the very top. I like the idea of a FB sew along a lot.

  79. Which pattern will the sew-along be too? Where will the sew-along be featured on (youtube, etc.)?

    1. Rochelle, “[f]or this sew-along you’re welcome to use any current shirtdress pattern from McCall’s, Vogue Patterns, Butterick or Kwik Sew. You can use a vintage pattern of ours if you’d like, though we may not be able to answer questions specific to old patterns.”

The sew-along will be here on the blog and on the Facebook group.

  80. How do we find the see along on Facebook? Will there be a YouTube video as well? Sometimes, it’s easier to see than have miles of explanation.

    1. We will try some video…

  81. I am in … will start looking through the stash tonight – this will be the incentive I NEED to get sewing again

  82. I’m definitely in. I recently made 2 out of denim and was just thinking that I could use a few in summery prints. I’m making at least 2, and plan to use a Kwik Sew pattern for one, and a McCalls pattern for the second one.

  83. Certainly count me in…..I am looking forward to this project!

  84. Does anyone have any idea of which type of skirt pattern to look for to recreate Kirsten Dunst’s yellow shirt dress (gorgeous!!) I purchased the V8970 pattern for the sew along

    1. Hi! Use McCall’s M6891 to re-create this dress. Good luck!

  85. Waaahhhhh!!!! I just found out about this sew along today. Any chance you’ll be doing other sew alongs? This is making me very sad.

    1. Was a great idea . I have been sewing for years, but have learned so much about basic sewing and how it can make an item look so professional. Thank you. Would love to see others.

    2. We’ve extended it for another month! Join our Facebook group if you can.

  86. Thank you McCalls and Meg Carter, it has been great fun being part of this Sew -Along! I did sign up for the Wrap Dress Sew -Along, got a couple of great patterns, bought some terrific fabric, but somewhere along the line I lost my way and didn’t start it!
