New Video: Exploring Fabric Options for Spring Sewing

Our latest video is all about FABRIC! Penny Payne, our longtime fabric editor, explores various fabric options for several new patterns from Butterick, McCall’s and Vogue Patterns. She also manages to get in a little fabric education, explaining things like scuba knits and “no-print prints.” Take a look and let us know what you think in the comments section. If you find it helpful we’ll definitely look at doing more fabric videos.

Cutting out a muslin for the McCall Pattern Company wrap dress sewalong.

Wrap Dress Sewalong update: This week I’ve been working on the muslin for my niece’s wrap dress. I’m just concerned about the bodice section, so that’s all I cut out and will stitch up. See my iPad in the photo? I’m binge-watching House of Cards on Netflix as I sew. Worth it alone for Claire’s sleek wardrobe. Don’t forget to read my co-host ReDpants Design’s post on fabric for your wrap dress. Hope you get in a lot of sewing this weekend!

  1. I’ve promised myself this weekend to at least get the pattern pinned to the fabric.

  2. Thank you for the video on fabric. I would LOVE to learn more in this area.
I would like to learn WHY a fabric is a good choice for a piece. Just as well, it would be helpful to have the opposite instruction: why is a certain type of fabric NOT a good choice. (I have learned a little the hard way. I made jeans with fabric that had NO give. I had to get rid of them.)
Also, I am bigger on top, so…… what fabrics flatter this type of figure and what fabrics should I avoid. Obviously this instruction would be helpful for other body types too.
I am enjoying the site. I won’t be making the wrap-around dress, but I’m reading your other posts. Keep it up!

  3. Thank you. So helpful to have options. I am going to go back, watch again, take some notes and look for the fabric types in my local fabric store as some I am not familiar with.

  4. Hey Penny, great job! Love your suggestions…I’m always looking for any inspiration that will keep me at my sewing machine. ; )

  5. Yep, the fabric video is great. Where did Penny get that fab ribbing? And the top she’s wearing did she make that? And that one shoulder number might work with a t shirt underneath as Penny suggests, but the HOTNESS would be totally lost with a layer underneath. I do have some striped fabric in mind if I ever make that. Neither the fabric or the pattern is in my stash. LOL

    1. The top she is wearing looks like K3976. I made the pattern in red jersey and love it.

  6. Excellent -thank you. Love the floral cotton with matching lace.

  7. This was so much fun – thank you!

  8. Loved this video! Loved seeing all of her fabric options and suggestions for these patterns!

  9. Thoroughly enjoyed this!

  10. I LOVE Claire!! She is so BAD! (in a good way lol)
EVERYTHING she wears is stunning on her and fits amazingly.
When I grow up I’m trying to have her whole wardrobe
